WHAT DO WE BELIEVE? Berean Baptist Church adheres to the Affirmation of Faith of the Minnesota Iowa Baptist Conference. We list them here, with accompanying Scripture references:
The Word of God We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. II Timothy 3:16,17 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." I Peter 1:24,25 "For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth , and the flower thereof falleth away : But the word of the Lord endureth forever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you."
The Trinity We believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three Persons; that these are equal to every divine perfection, and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence and redemption. " Matthew 3:16,17 And Jesus, when he was baptized , went up straightway out of the water: and, lo , the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying , This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased . " Matthew 28:19 "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:"
God The Father We believe in God, the Father, an infinite, personal spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love. We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. " John 3:16 - 18 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish , but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved . He that believeth on him is not condemned : but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. "
Jesus Christ We believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings. We believe in His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people and personal, visible return to earth. " John 1:1-5 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made . In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.." " Galatians 4: 4-5 "But when the fullness of the time was come , God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. "
The Holy Spirit We believe in the Holy Spirit who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify and empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Christ, and that He is the abiding helper, teacher and guide. " John 16:7-15 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away : for if I go not away , the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart , I will send him unto you. And when he is come , he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin , because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged . I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come , he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear , that shall he speak : and he will shew you things to come . He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I , that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. " " I Corinthians 12:13 "For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit."
Regeneration We believe that all men are sinners by nature and therefore are under condemnation. Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned (Romans 5:12). I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.(Galatians 2:20) Through Christ a man or woman are regenerated. We also believe that those who believe and repent of their sins (by the grace of God) and who place their trust in Jesus Christ as Saviour are regenerated by the power of the Holy Spirit. " Romans 3:23; "For all have sinned , and come short of the glory of God;" " Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.." " Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
The Church We believe in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members. We believe in the local church consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized on a credible profession of faith and associated for worship, work, and fellowship. We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local church the primary task of giving the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost world. " Ephesians 1:22-23 "And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all." " I Peter 2:9-10 "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy , but now have obtained mercy . "
Christian Conduct We believe that a Christian should live for the glory of God and the well being of his fellowman; that his conduct should be blameless before the world; that he should be a faithful steward of his possessions and that he should seek to realize for himself and others the full stature of maturity in Christ.
The Ordinances We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has committed two ordinances to the church, baptism and the Lord's Supper. We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the triune God. We believe that the Lord's Supper was instituted by Christ for commemoration of His death and resurrection. We believe that those two ordinances should be observed and administered until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. " Matthew 28:19 "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" " Matthew 26:26-29 "While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, 'Take and eat; this is my body.' Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."
Religious Liberty We believe that every human being has direct relations with God, and is responsible to God alone in all matters of faith; that each church is independent and must be free from interference by an ecclesiastical or political authority; that therefore, Church and State must be kept separate as having different functions, each fulfilling its duties free from the dictation or patronage of the other. " Revelation 1:6 "And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.." " Mark 12:17 "And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marveled at him."
Church Cooperation We believe that local churches can best promote the cause of Jesus Christ by cooperating with one another in a denominational organization. Such an organization, whether a regional or district conference, exists and functions by the will of the churches. Cooperation in a conference is voluntary and may be terminated at any time. Churches may likewise cooperate with inter- denominational fellowships on a voluntary, independent basis. " II Corinthians 8:18-19 "And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches; And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:" " I Corinthians 16:1-9 "Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store , as God hath prospered him , that there be no gatherings when I come . And when I come , whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem. And if it be meet that I go also, they shall go with me. Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through Macedonia: for I do pass through Macedonia. And it may be that I will abide , yea, and winter with you, that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go . For I will not see you now by the way; but I trust to tarry a while with you, if the Lord permit . But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost. For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries ."
Last Things We believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth, and the establishment of His Kingdom. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment, the eternal felicity of the righteous and the endless suffering of the wicked. " Matthew 24:36-44 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be . For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking , marrying and giving in marriage , until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came , and took them all away ; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be . Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken , and the other left . Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken , and the other left . Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come . But know this, that if the good man of the house had known in what watch the thief would come , he would have watched , and would not have suffered his house to be broken up . Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh ." " I Thessalonians 4:13-18 "But I would not have you to be ignorant , brethren, concerning them which are asleep , that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again , even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep . 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. "
